HOOPLA UPDATE
IMPORTANT CHANGES TO HOOPLA SERVICES STARTING MAY 1
If you use Hoopla through Cass District Library (CDL), please be aware of some upcoming changes to the service, effective May 1, 2025.
Due to rising costs for digital materials, certain higher-priced items will no longer be available to check out on Hoopla.
Why is this happening?
One of Hoopla’s most popular features is instant access—no waitlists, no holds. However, each time a title is borrowed, CDL is charged a fee, and those fees are set by publishers. While individual contracts vary, there has been a significant and ongoing increase in the cost of eBooks and eAudiobooks.
At the same time, more CDL patrons are using Hoopla each month, leading to a steady rise in monthly expenses. So far in 2025, Hoopla costs have increased by 27% compared to last year. Unfortunately, this has created a budgeting challenge that is no longer sustainable without some adjustments.
CDL is not alone in facing this issue. Libraries nationwide are grappling with the same budget pressures due to increased demand and the rising cost of digital content. Many are having to make difficult decisions to continue offering popular services like Hoopla in a financially responsible way.
What does this mean for you?
To ensure we can continue offering Hoopla to all patrons, some limitations are being introduced. While you’ll still have access to a wide selection of content, more expensive titles may be restricted.
We understand that changes like these can be frustrating. Please know that we’re committed to keeping Hoopla as accessible and useful as possible while also being responsible stewards of the library’s budget.
